Elastics

Rubber bands work in conjunction with braces and aligners. With braces or aligners, we are able to straighten the teeth independently in one arch (the top arch or the bottom arch), but it is the rubber band that helps us fit each arch together. Wearing rubber bands will initially make your teeth sore. This soreness will go away after a couple of days of continuous wear. Giving your teeth a “break” from the rubber band will only make them feel sore again the next time you wear them.

Consistent rubber band wear is one of the most critical determinants of whether treatment is completed on time. Wear your rubber bands 24/7, unless otherwise instructed. The only times that you are allowed to take them off are during main meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and while brushing. We do not recommend taking them off for small snacks. Rubber bands will lose their elasticity after hours of wear; therefore you need to replace them 2-3 times a day. You will figure out what works best for you. If you forget a new set put in the same set you had in, it’s always better to wear something than nothing. Replace your rubber bands immediately once they break. Always carry a spare bag with you at all times. If you run low on your rubber bands, let us know and we will provide you more.

Instructions on how to place and wear rubber bands in your particular case will be provided at your appointment. Only wear the elastics we give you at your appointment from our office. If you ever need more call the office and we will have them ready for you. It is important to follow the instructions given to you, to correct your specific needs. If you ever have any questions reach out to our office.
